Surgical smoke is a complex mix of solid and liquid particles. Apart from the unpleasant smell in the OR and the visual impairment it causes to the surgeon, this aerosol may contain hazardous substances such as chemicals, live bacteria, and viruses. In addition, the smoke generated daily in an operating room corresponds to an average of 27-30 cigarettes and thus represents a health risk for the OR staff.3
